Tornado in Marion, Indiana Confirmed After Severe Storms

National Weather Service investigators determined that a tornado traveled between the northeast side of Sweetser and the southwest side of Marion. Officials rated it EF0, with estimated peak winds of 75 mph.

Damage associated with the tornado occurred inside a much larger zone of destructive thunderstorm winds affecting Sweetser, Marion, Gas City, Jonesboro, and nearby areas.

Numerous reports described fallen trees, downed power lines, structural damage, and roads blocked by debris.

Marion referenced in the confirmed tornado report is Marion, Indiana, in Grant County. It should not be confused with Marion County, where Indianapolis is located.

National Weather Service Confirms Tornado Near Marion

National Weather Service officials announced on July 28 that a preliminary damage survey had identified at least an EF0 tornado between Sweetser and Marion.

Initial survey work connected several damaged trees and at least one damaged business with tornadic circulation. Investigators also found that circulation weakened fairly quickly, while destructive straight-line winds continued southeast across Grant County.

A more detailed survey released July 29 classified the tornado with several key measurements:

  • EF0 rating
  • Estimated peak winds of 75 mph
  • 5.62-mile path
  • Maximum width of approximately 50 yards
  • No fatalities
  • No officially attributed injuries

Ground inspections and drone surveys documented a broader zone of sporadic wind damage stretching through Sweetser, Marion, and areas toward Gas City.

Investigators described circulation as weak and disorganized. Evidence suggested intermittent touchdown points inside a larger area affected by severe thunderstorm winds.

Such findings helped investigators separate damage caused directly by tornadic rotation and damage caused by powerful straight-line winds.

Tornado Timeline and Track

Storm surveys placed tornado development at approximately 4:31 p.m. EDT on July 27.

Initial touchdown occurred about one mile north-northwest of Sweetser near West 200 North and North 500 West. Circulation first reached the ground in a cornfield before entering a neighborhood on Sweetser’s northeast side.

Movement continued southeast toward Marion.

Dissipation occurred at approximately 4:37 p.m. EDT, around one mile southwest of Marion. Intermittent ground contact lasted roughly six minutes across a surveyed path measuring 5.62 miles.

Severe wind did not end when tornadic circulation weakened.

Damaging straight-line winds continued southeast through Marion and toward Gas City. Estimated gusts near 60 mph were reported in Marion around 4:40 p.m.

By approximately 4:51 p.m., severe thunderstorms moving southeast were still capable of producing wind gusts near 60 mph.

Timing matters when reviewing damage reports because storm destruction recorded later or farther southeast was not automatically caused by the confirmed tornado.

Damage in Sweetser and Along the Tornado Path


Northeastern Sweetser experienced some of the earliest confirmed tornado damage.

Several large tree branches came down as circulation moved through residential areas. Tree trunks were snapped along Allen Drive, Mary Lou Road, and Laura Lane.

Significant tree damage also occurred near homes along West Magers Road. One large tree fell onto a house roof, while another property experienced fallen branches and damaged fencing.

Damage increased after circulation crossed North 400.

An apartment complex experienced large fallen branches, and several apartment buildings sustained roof damage. Circulation then moved across open fields before crossing State Road 18.

A trucking company facility south of State Road 18 sustained substantial roof damage. Much of the roofing material was stripped away, although underlying plywood stayed intact.

Debris traveled across State Road 18 during the storm. One notable piece was a steel reel carried onto the north side of the highway.

Structural damage at that location gave investigators additional evidence that tornadic winds had affected part of the corridor instead of all damage being caused solely by straight-line thunderstorm winds.

Damage Near Marion

Extensive tree damage developed as circulation approached Marion.

Homes between West 9th Street and West 16th Street, particularly between Buffalo Avenue and Norton Avenue, experienced substantial tree damage.

Storm reports logged around 4:35 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. described additional destruction across Marion and nearby areas.

Reported damage included:

  • Trees down on Marion’s south side
  • A fallen tree on South Western Avenue
  • Several trees down near Indiana Wesleyan University
  • Damage around East 32nd through East 38th streets
  • Large trees with tops sheared off near 10th Street and South Virginia Avenue
  • Trees blocking State Road 15 between Marion and Gas City

Additional reports placed downed trees and power lines around Jonesboro and near Marion Municipal Airport.

Storm damage continued southeast into other parts of Grant County.

A large tree was snapped on Gas City’s north side. Near 100 South and 500 East, a metal roof was torn off a barn.

Investigators eventually identified a transition in the damage pattern southeast of State Road 9 on Marion’s south side. Tornadic circulation had weakened by that point, while powerful straight-line winds continued producing damage.

Such a distinction is important when discussing the tornado in Marion, Indiana, because not every damaged tree, structure, or utility line around Marion, Gas City, and Jonesboro fell inside the tornado’s confirmed path.
